Some customers note the lack of certain menu items, like beans, which are common in many fish and chip shops. A few reviews mention occasional higher pricing compared to other local options, though many agree that the quality compensates for it. Wait times during peak hours can be longer, especially when the Saturday market draws in crowds. Limited vegetarian options also receive occasional critiques, as fish and meat dominate the menu. These minor issues don’t overshadow the overall positive reception of The Jolly Roger.
What a lovely surprise! I wondered in as first place I came to and was starving and the excellent service began. I was warmly welcomed and attended to. I felt a most valued customer the minute entered. It is very old fashioned in many ways and better for it. Care of customer was paramount and natural to the proprietors. Between serving staff were attentive to the social needs of an elderly fella who I am sure felt a sense of belonging and much social good was done. The place appeared clean and to standard. The food was good simple fayre which I enjoyed. I note fractionally more expensive than similar cafe down the road. There's a good few similar places in Bury but this one deserves to be a favourite and to be full and successful. The good old fashioned manner and exemplary care of customers really charmed me here. Well done!
We've always walked past this place when in town but on Saturday the mother-in-law came over and whilst doing a spot of shopping we decided to finally go in and I'm so glad we did. Everyone was so friendly, really welcoming, felt like you were visiting friends from the first minute and the food was really good, great value, we all got the dine-in deal: Fish and Chips, Peas, Bread & Butter and a Tea for £12.50 and honestly it was one of the best I've had this side of Yorkshire. The batter was perfectly crispy and the fish big chunky and flaky! Top marks.
Went in today dad in wheelchair staff very friendly. Food good. Fish special cheese and onion pie and gravy. Meat pie chips Only problem is didn’t see beans on the menu. All good
This was the 2nd time we've tried this chip shop its very clean and bright, you get service with a smile friendly and welcoming 😊 both occasions it was great service. Food was piping hot and very tasty and a good size portion, last time we had fish chips 'n' peas..... this time we had one of the specials pudding chips peas and gravy bread and butter and a hot drink. First visit here on a day trip to Bury Market. We went for "The special" Cod, chips and peas, A slice of bread and butter and a pot of tea for an amazing £10.50. Lovely clean, airy cafe with very friendly welcoming staff. 3 of us had the special and we all enjoyed it very much. Just the right size portion very tasty and nice and hot. Will definitely recommend and return next time we go to the market.
The best fish and chips. The fish was battered just right. I recommend the gravy, curry, and homemade tartar sauce. I will definitely come back.
My friend and I had a great meal here this afternoon. Fish and chips cooked to perfection in this traditional English cafe. Will definitely return xx
